V8 Vantage 4.3

(2005 - 2008)

AMV8 Vantage concept was greeted with universal acclaim - a true Aston Martin destined for great things and sometimes considered a direct competitor for the Porsche 911. And in showing the concept car a full two years before the actual production car, Aston Martin created a huge demand long before the car was tested in the auto-press . The production ready car was finally unveiled in March 2005 at the Geneva Salon.

Some estimate by the time the car was first shown, some dealers had as much as a three year waiting list for the Vantage such has been the interest. Series production of the Vantage began in the Autumn of 2005 at a rate of approaching 3000 annually on a second assembly line within the Gaydon factory, with approximately 70% going outside of the UK. Deliveries of the V8 Vantage to customers in the UK and Europe began in October 05 with customers in North America and the rest of the world started waiting until early 2006.

The V8 Vantage was the second Aston Martin production car based on the VH architecture as already seen on the DB9, but it is the first to use a new 4.3 litre quad cam 32 valve dry sumped V8 engine. Power was quoted at 380bhp @ 7000rpm and torque of 302 lb/ft @ 5000rpm. This would allow the 1570kg machine a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 and 0-100 mph in 10.7 with the standard 6 speed Graziano manual gearbox. The engine was unique to Aston Martin but used a Jaguar sourced block with unique internal dimensions. It was handbuilt alongside the V12 at the Aston Martin Engine Plant in Cologne, Germany.

The Vantage was strictly a 2 seater but does have a decent boot and plenty of space behind the seats.

V8 Vantage 4.7 (MY2009 – MY2012)

 (2008 - 2012)

Announced in late May 2008, the MY2009 V8 Vantage was fitted with an extensively re-worked larger capacity 4.7 litre engine achieved by both increased bore and stroke. Externally the MY2009 appeared identical to the pervious model, although the interior centre console followed closely that in the DBS and MY2009 DB9 complete with glass ECU in place of a key and a new hard driver sat-nav system. Standard cars were fitted with new, unique, 20 spoke 19 inch wheels. Of note is that the 'bee-sting' rear radio antenna was been deleted from the 4.7 as the radio antenna was incorporated into the windscreen.

The V8 Vantage transmissions had also undergone changes to improve performance and to handle the increased levels of power and torque. Both the standard manual and optional Sportshift benefited from a modified clutch and flywheel, reducing clutch pedal efforts and delivering a 0.5kg weight saving, reducing the rotating masses within the powertrain, and hence increasing engine responsiveness. Sportshift also underwent a series of specific changes to broaden the capabilities of the gearbox. Changes included a revised control strategy, allowing the transmission, rather than the engine, to dictate how best the engine torque should be deployed to optimise performance and delivered power smoothly and consistently. The coupe was also fitted the stiffer suspension first seen on the Roadster and also had Bilstein dampers as standard.

Unexpectedly, the clear rear light clusters as seen on the N400 models were initially not carried over to the standard 4.7 Vantage although they later became optional.

For the 2012MY, in line with the Virage, the car adopted the Garmin sat-nav and ‘beam blade’ wiper design, although these cars are quite rare as the new V8 Vantage MY2012.25 was introduced a few months after the MY2012 cars entered production.

V8 Vantage 4.7 (MY2012.25 on)

Announced just two weeks in advance of the 2012 Geneva Salon, the 'entry level' V8 Vantage 4.7 received the most comprehensive programme of enhancements since the introduction of the 4.7-litre Vantage in 2008. The much revised car features a raft of improvements first seen in the Vantage S introduced a few months previously. The engine is the same 4.7 420bhp V8 as before and the standard six-speed manual transmission remains (which initially was not available on the Vantage S), but the optional six-speed Sportshift automated manual transmission has now been replaced with the, exclusive to Aston Martin, seven-speed Sportshift II designed by Prodrive.

Further dynamic enhancements centre on the V8 Vantage’s chassis, which features more developments from the Vantage S. The steering has been quickened and the brakes are the same as the S thanks to new 380mm two-piece ventilated cast-iron front discs and six piston callipers. A neat and useful feature is Hill Start Assist (HSA) for more precise control on steep inclines. The V8 Vantage also comes with tyres from the ‘S’ that are 10mm wider than previously.

The exterior of the car is impossible to distinguish from the higher powered V8 Vantage S, especially if the ‘V-spoke’ wheels are fitted instead of the standard fit forged 10 spoke items. The car has received the N420 style sills although these are not as pronounced as on the ‘S’. The aerodynamic splitter and rear diffuser are similar to those on the ‘S’. They are made of high quality black plastic although the carbon items from the S are available as an option, making identification even more difficult. Despite the comprehensive updates, the price of the V8 Vantage coupe has been kept attractive and competitive UK starting from just £84,995 inc VAT.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Aston Martin unveiled the production version of its eagerly awaited Aston Martin V8 Vantage at the 2005 Geneva International Motor Show on Tuesday 1st March. First shown as a concept car at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Aston Martin AMV8 Vantage immediately caused a worldwide sensation as it allows Aston Martin to enter a new sector of the premium sports car market with a genuine alternative to other cars that are currently on offer.

It will be built at Aston Martin's Headquarters at Gaydon, Warwickshire, UK, and completes the current Aston Martin line-up. This now comprises the flagship Aston Martin Vanquish S, the elegant Aston Martin DB9 and the agile Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

The exterior of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage is beautiful and perfectly proportioned from every angle with a low purposeful stance. Each carefully detailed feature provides graphic evidence of the painstaking craftsmanship and quality, which is synonymous with the Aston Martin marque.

The long bonnet and two-seater cabin creates an instantly recognisable stance, while minimal front and rear overhangs, combined with a wide track, appear to push the rear wheels out and enhance the extremities of the bodywork. At the rear a hatchback offers practicality not normally found in sports cars of this type.

Offered with an imaginative combination of different leathers, contemporary fabrics and aluminium, Aston Martin V8 Vantage customers will have an extensive choice of standard body and trim colours from which to choose.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a two-seater, with the rear environment offering a large luggage shelf area accessed by a tailgate.

Inside, Aston Martin's craftsmanship is matched to striking 21st century style. The dials are made from aluminium, and together with the switchgear have a very distinct design and unique Aston Martin look and feel.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage has endured the most extensive test and development programme in the Company's 91 year history during which 78 Prototypes were vigorously tested more than 1½ million miles. In Dubai over 12,000 miles of testing was carried out where ambient temperatures regularly hit 48ºc and the bodywork of the cars reached 87ºc.

High speed testing was conducted at the Nardo test track in Italy and extensive testing was carried out at Nurburgring's Nordschleife in Germany, and cold weather testing in temperatures as low as -30ºc was undertaken in Sweden.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is the second model to use Aston Martin's unique VH (Vertical Horizontal) architecture. Constructed from lightweight aluminium extrusions, precision castings and pressings, the underframe is bonded with aerospace adhesives and mechanically fixed with self-piercing rivets.

Certain complex parts of the frame are precision die cast in aluminium; the door inner panels are cast magnesium and the windscreen surround is a one piece aluminium casting.

The frame is bonded with cold-cure adhesive which has exceptional damping properties that help soak up the vibrations which may otherwise appear if the structure was welded.

The unique architecture provides an excellent backbone, while the use of sophisticated materials such as lightweight alloys, magnesium and advanced composites for the body further contributes to the car's low weight and class-leading rigidity.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage uses a combination of aluminium, steel and advanced composite exterior panels. Composites are used for panels with a high degree of complexity and a deeper shape, such as the front wings, which incorporate the distinctive side strakes.

Aston Martin's engineers have worked with Ford Research and Nottingham University to develop RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) composite panels, using unique processes and materials, resulting in composite panels and extremely high surface finish. The process ensures that the optimum amount of reinforcement material is used in each area of the panel to ensure optimum strength and weight.

Steel pressings are used for the body side panels to achieve the sheer depth of the design. This delivers the required style without resorting to using several panels in the rear three-quarter area, resulting in a remarkably clean and uncluttered appearance.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is very much a pure sports car, so from the outset, the priority of Aston Martin's engineers was to focus on a lightweight, compact size, agility and power. At just 4.38 metres long it is compact and very nimble and is the smallest model in the Aston Martin range.

The all new 380 bhp engine is a 4.3 litre, low emissions all aluminium alloy V8, unique to Aston Martin. This new V8 uses the latest technology to deliver outstanding performance in all environments.

The layout of the powertrain adopts a transaxle configuration, whereby the front mid-mounted engine is connected to the transmission - at the rear of the car - via a cast aluminium torque tube and carbon fibre prop-shaft. This configuration provides the car with a 49:51 weight distribution, giving outstanding handling characteristics and excellent all round capabilities.

Aston Martin has adopted a dry-sump lubrication system for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Often used in racing cars, this system allows the engine to sit very low in the body, lowering the centre of gravity which in turn helps to improve handling and the overall balance and stability of the car. The system also helps to improve engine durability by maintaining lubrication under conditions of extreme cornering and braking.

The advanced quad-cam 32-valve engine is individually hand assembled by skilled Aston Martin technicians at the company's new engine production facility in Cologne, Germany, where every Aston Martin engine, including the V12 for Vanquish S and DB9, is built.

The bore and stroke dimensions are optimised to provide an excellent balance between outright power and torque, while a resonance induction system improves tractability and performance.

The inlet camshaft timing is variable resulting in improved low-end throttle response, mid-range torque and seamless power delivery. Maximum power is 380bhp @ 7000rpm and maximum torque 302lb ft @ 5000rpm.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage will be initially offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and other alternatives will be announced at a later date. A great deal of time and effort has been spent ensuring that the new transmission has a smooth and fast shift action to ensure its ultra close ratios can be used to maximum effect.

Recall Aston Martin Vantage

China problems force Aston Martin into global recall of 1,658 cars.

Aston Martin is issuing a global recall for 1,658 of its Vantage cars because of a software issue with the clutch could lead to the car stalling, according to a Reuters. The global recall stems from a problem that seemed to be only affecting certain Vantage models sold in China.

The recall covers any Vantage that was built betwe...

Aston Martin Vantage GT8 (2016)

The 8 denotes the number of cylinders under the bonnet. The GT12 had, you guessed it, 12 cylinders – but it also had one other large number on the spec sheet: the price. That car cost a cool £250,000, while the GT8 costs a more reasonable (but only comparatively) £165,000.

Not quite. The V8’s been massaged to produced an extra 10bhp, for a 440bhp total, and there’s 361lb ft to help haul you up ...

What It Cost Owning an Aston Martin for a Year
