V8 Vantage Roadster 4.3

(2007 - 2008)

The US is now the biggest market for Aston Martin, so it has come as no surprise that the Los Angeles Motor Show 2006 was chosen to launch the Roadster version of the popular V8 Vantage. After a recent visit to the West Coast of the USA, I would imagine that a convertible Aston can be driven most if not all year round with the roof lowered. Strangely, the V8 Vantage Roadster was first glimpsed in the background shot of the AM design studio on a DVD available for short time in the UK in late 2003 from the British store, Marks & Spencer.

Even in the video, the twin leather covered ‘humps’ on the hard tonneau cover (not dissimilar to those seen on the DB AR1) made it to production. The roof, a triple layered fabric type folded down totally flat; it could even be raised or lowered without manual assistance in 18 seconds at speeds of upto 30 mph, neat trick!

The rigidity of the Roadster was enhanced by the use of slightly thicker gauge aluminium within the platform and strengthening webs within the sills. This only added a tiny 70kg over the closed car. Whilst the stiffness of the Vantage was believed to be 27,000 Newton Meters per degree, the roadster was a very commendable 21,000. In comparison, the early DB9 Volante was, I understand 15,500 although this was improved upon as time passed. Production began in the second quarter of 2007 with an initial UK price of £92,147 for the manual, an £8,000 premium over the coupe.

(2008 - 2012)

As announced in May 2008, the V8 Vantage Roadster also received the new 4.7 litre V8 and the DBS inspired centre console complete with the 'ECU' glass and steel device in place of the key. I took these pictures at the Aston Martin Hospitality facility erected during Le Mans 2008. First deliveries of the production 4.7 MY2009 car were during the third quarter of 2008.

Announced alongside the coupe, the Roadster also received a similar chassis makeover as the coupe (and based on the Vantage S). The 2013MY V8 Vantage Roadster retains the 420bhp, 4.7 litre V8 but comes with two transmission options. A six-speed manual remains for those preferring the traditional control of a stick-shift sports car. Alongside this is a new seven-speed Sportshift II by Prodrive, replacing the previous six-speed version.

Raised or lowered in just 18 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph, the fabric hood stows beneath an aluminium tonneau.

This particular example above was seen at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012,  finished in Morning Frost White with Spicy Red leather interior. It is also fitted with seven-speed Sportshift II and carbon pack.

Telling the regular Vantage Roadster from the ‘S’ version is not easy, as both are available with a choice of manual or Sportshift transmissions and the same choice of wheel options. The regular car does not have the exclusive stitching on the door cards on the ‘S’, just has a ‘Vantage’ badge on the rear, has less pronounced side sills and the front splitter is not made from carbon fibre.
