DBS Coupe Zagato Centennial

(2013)

A real highlight of the Kensington Palace Aston Martin Centenary Timeline, marking the 100 years of the company, was the debut of two unique coachbuilt Zagatos. The association between the two companies began over 50 years ago and Aston Zagatos are always outstanding  and sometimes a little challenging too. The DBS Coupe Zagato Centennial, the work of Zagato Atelier's Chief Designer, Norihiko Harada,  is very much in the same vein.

On first glance, the DBS Zagato bears some resemblance to both the Volvo P1800 and perhaps the Lancia Hyena yet it could not be described as either retro or dated. Typically, the DBS Zagato features a double-bubble roof profile, but this has been set off by a beautifully curved, one-piece polished aluminium strip that begins at the car’s beltline,  across the top of the rear window and back down to the other side. The double-bubble roof curves continue over the rear screen and onto the bootlid.

The satin alloy grille will surely be a delight to fans of the 1960′s DBS. Like the DBS, it  extends almost the full width of bespoke the front of the car and also houses the interestingly styled projector headlight unit. At the rear, the car is neatly finished by new light clusters, an aggressive rear diffuser and curious trapezoidal exhaust pipes.

The 20 inch wheels are straight from the donor DBS V12 as is the running gear, ceramic brakes and 510 bhp spec AM08 engine. The interior of the car appear to have been unmodified from the regular car.

The car was also shown the following year at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show on the stand of the Italian car magazine, Quattroruote. By the time the public had been admitted to the show, the car had been surrounded by rather ugly metal barriers and giving a rather poor view of the most beautiful car at the show.

The car has been commissioned by a young and prestigious Japanese entrepreneur who has  preferred to remain anonymous. Apparently, their are no plans for the DBS Coupe Zagato into even limited production.

Zagato Atelier pays tribute to Aston Martin's 100th Anniversary with the announcement of two very special projects: the DBS Coupé Zagato Centennial, delivered to a young and prestigious Japanese entrepreneur and the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial, conceived for the well known American car collector Peter Read

The Aston Martin DBS Coupé Zagato Centennial is an exotic cross of Aston Martin DNA with Italian flair and Milanese inspiration, sporting a 'double bubble' roof design, reminiscent of Zagato cars from the 1950s.

Norihiko Harada, Zagato's Chief Designer explains; "Redesigning the DBS was a difficult job. The DBS is already one of the most beautiful modern sports cars around. Our challenge was to bring sporty styling together with a more Mediterranean luxury GT feel, all with typical Zagato quality." A project supported by Ennio Capasa, Creative Director of CoSTUME NATIONAL, whose creative influence is visible throughout the interior.

The beauty of this car is due to a amalgamation of sportiness and elegance. The smooth tail section gives it a great presence and the final result is unveiled today: a highly personalised and unique thoroughbred Aston Martin DBS Coupé Zagato Centennial, brimming with soul and style in the great tradition of Aston Martin Zagato's.
